Home insurance premiums have continued to fall, bringing some welcome news for households across the UK.
Recent analysis shows that average UK home insurance premiums dropped by 9% year-on-year in January 2026. This follows a period where many homeowners had seen insurance costs rise due to higher claims, inflation and weather-related risks.
Why are premiums falling?
One of the factors linked to the reduction is a fall in severe weather warnings across the UK.
Red storm warnings reportedly fell from 18 in 2022 to just four in 2024, while amber warnings also declined sharply during the same period. Fewer severe weather events can reduce pressure on insurers, which may help ease premiums for some households.
However, this does not mean homeowners should become complacent.
Weather risks remain
Although premiums have started to ease, insurers are still warning households about the possibility of wetter-than-average weather later in the year.
Heavy rainfall, storms and flooding can all lead to serious property damage, so it remains important to check that your home insurance policy provides the right level of protection.
Why reviewing your cover matters
A lower premium may be appealing, but cost should not be the only factor when choosing home insurance.
It is important to check:
- What your buildings and contents insurance covers
- Whether weather-related damage is included
- Any exclusions or limits within the policy
- The excess you would need to pay if you made a claim
- Whether your cover still reflects the value of your home and belongings
The cheapest policy may not always provide the most suitable protection for your needs.
