Accidents happen, often when you least expect them. A drink knocked over near the sofa, a dropped device, or a TV screen cracked by mistake can quickly turn into an expensive problem.
Recent research from Aviva found that accidental damage is the leading cause of home insurance claims in the UK. According to the report, 32% of home insurance claims over the last four years were linked to accidental damage.
The average value of these claims has also increased. Since 2022, the average accidental damage claim has risen by 63% to £1,869. This shows how costly everyday mistakes can become without the right level of cover in place.
What counts as accidental damage?
Accidental damage usually refers to sudden and unexpected damage caused by a one-off incident.
Common examples can include:
- Accidentally cracking a TV screen
- Spilling drinks on carpets, sofas or electrical items
- Dropping and damaging gadgets
- Scorch marks caused by irons, hair curlers or hairdryers
- Breakages caused by children playing in the home
Aviva’s research found that incidents involving TVs accounted for 18% of accidental damage claims. Spilled drinks made up 8% of claims, while children were also linked to 8% of claims, often due to spillages or broken gadgets.
Is accidental damage included in home insurance?
Accidental damage is not automatically included in many standard home insurance policies.
In many cases, it needs to be added as an optional extra. This could apply to your buildings insurance, contents insurance, or both, depending on the type of protection you need.
Adding accidental damage cover may increase your monthly premium, but it could help reduce the financial stress of repairing or replacing items if something does go wrong.
Why it is worth checking your policy
Every home insurance policy is different, so it is important to understand exactly what is and is not covered.
Some policies may cover certain types of accidental damage as standard, while others may exclude it unless you have specifically added it. There may also be limits, excesses and exclusions to be aware of.
Checking your policy now could help you avoid a nasty surprise if you ever need to make a claim.
