Recent research suggests that growing concerns around safety, global instability and financial uncertainty are encouraging more people to consider protection insurance.
For many households, protection can provide an important financial safety net if illness, injury, loss of income or death affects their ability to manage everyday commitments.
A changing sense of security
Research suggests that many people feel more vulnerable and uncertain than they did a decade ago.
Ongoing geopolitical tensions, concerns around global terrorism and wider global instability are all influencing how people think about personal and financial security.
The research found that women are more likely to feel uneasy about their personal safety today, with 52% saying they feel more uncertain than they did 10 years ago, compared with 38% of men.
Everyday situations are also contributing to feelings of unease. The research found that 54% of fearful adults no longer feel safe in crowded places, while concerns around travelling abroad and attending large organised events have also increased.
Travelling alone remains a particular concern for women, with 61% saying they feel less safe doing so, compared with 32% of men.
Younger adults are thinking ahead
Younger adults are also becoming more aware of the importance of financial protection.
Many are recognising the pressure that illness, injury or a loss of income could place on their household finances, especially if they have a mortgage, rent, bills or dependants to support.
As concerns around financial resilience continue to grow, more people are taking practical steps to feel better prepared. Four in 10 fearful adults said they became more interested in protection insurance products during March 2026.
Why protection matters
Protection insurance can provide financial support if illness, injury or death affects your ability to earn an income or meet essential costs.
Depending on the policy, this support may be paid as a lump sum or as regular monthly payments.
For homeowners and families, protection can help provide reassurance that mortgage payments, household bills and everyday living costs could still be managed during difficult times.
Common forms of protection include:
- Life insurance
- Critical illness cover
- Income protection insurance
Each type of policy works differently, so it is important to understand what cover may be suitable for your circumstances.
